But, surely not!? Albariño is from Spain…I hear you cry, or maybe not.
I love advocating the unusual so when me and my colleagues discovered this gem from New Zealand we just knew we had to have it. Albariño is the grape famed for the wines produced in the Rias Baixas area of North West Spain, not too far from the Portuguese border. Here the guys from Gisborne have taken the mantle in producing this cool grape, with a Kiwi twist.
Nose; soft orange, grapefruit, lemon zest with some cut grass and a dash of white pepper. The palate hits you with some great acidity from the off. Light melon with some delicate orange and pineapple flavours culminating with a sprig of sherbet fizz.
As whites go this is pure class!
