Mike Matthews – Marks & Spencer Tasting Gift Box

M&S LogoWhen all in the world of wine is a positive minefield, it’s always handy when one of the UK’s leading supermarket retailers takes the first steps to demystifying matters. Marks & Spencer have put together a 6 bottle tasting gift box, along with an introductory tasting DVD from residential wine expert, Chris Murphy.
The styles of wines selected will be very familiar to even the most amateur of drinkers, a good well rounded collection belonging to some of the globes most famous wine producing regions, ideally suited to the coming festive season too.

To begin with we see wines more recognised as traditional Christmas fare, M&S Wine Tasting Gift BoxBurgundy’s Mâcon-Villages Christian Lebaupin 2010 and Bordeaux’s Lucien Lurton 2010. Sherwood Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012 represents New Zealand whilst Finca Manzanos Selección de Victor Rioja 2011 pops up from Spain. The final two fall into my trend setting category with La Vita Italia Pinot Grigio 2011 from Sicily, a region I recommend people keep an eye out for, and lastly Montevista Malbec Reserva 2010 from Chile.

Chris Murphy’s DVD is a well thought out, 25 minute introductory education into wine. If you are new to tasting, or looking for a simple explanation into how and what we look for in wine, then Chris delivers with a very simplistic clear style, adopting the Wines & Spirit Education Trusts systematic approach to tasting. Each wine you receive will have Murphy giving a brief tasting note, guiding you the viewer, in the basics of that particular wine. You can watch it as a whole DVD or break it down bottle by bottle to help you better understand the wines you are drinking. To conclude, Murphy runs through a brief glossary of terminology so you won’t be left scratching your heads in ‘wine-speak.’

Accompanying each DVD is a small booklet offering further information about each wine, a written account of the tasting technique shown and the glossary of wine terms.

This is the ideal gift for any budding enthusiast to taste. Make an evening of it, invite your friends and use the DVD to explore your own palate.

All reviews are my own. I am not paid for any reviews I write. I will always give an honest assessment of the wines I taste and review.
