Fox Gordon ‘Princess’ Fiano
Adelaide Hills – Australia
Grape Variety – Fiano
ABV – 14%
Pale gold colour. Good tropical, grapefruit nose with some rum and raisin notes. Dry, good acidity and length. The palate shows citrus, grapefruit characteristics backed up by green pepper and spice.
Fiano is a grape variety normally associated with the Campania region of Italy. Now it’s being produced in certain areas of Australia, like this one in Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Cool climate region producing some really classy wines.
This variety was a first for me. I was expecting a light, fresh, easy and uncomplicated wine. Unjustified really but based purely on what I know about Italian grape varieties and where this wine was produced. But I like surprises. And this was definitely a very good surprise.
This wine was lovely. Fresh, with good dominant tropical fruit. The nose is very distinctive. I could hang the glass under my nose and inhale all day. Granted I may look a wee bit silly but the aromas are worth it. The scents produced are more in keeping with a bottle aged wine and the palate is very reminiscent of good Sauvignon Blanc. In actual fact, this is a good alternative to Sauvignon.
Worth a look at for the adventurous wine drinker.
Drink on its own or with pork dishes.
